ANALYSING ROMANTIC COMEDY TRAILERS - 'ANYONE BUT YOU'

The fourth trailer I am going to be looking at to see how genre is presented and where it is apparent is from the film 'ANYONE BUT YOU'.

THE THEATRICAL TRAILER:

The trailer for 'Anyone But You' clearly establishes the romantic comedy genre by using classic tropes, narrative structure, humour, music and sound with romantic elements that make the trailer easy to spot the romantic comedy genre. 'Anyone But You' is a very classic enemies to lovers trope, where they eventually rekindle their relationship.

Firstly, the trailer explores the narrative without giving too much about the ending away. There is some context to why they are enemies but not enough to grasp the whole plot. Then the trailer shows them decide to be in a ‘fake relationship’ in order to solve their problems. This is a common romantic comedy trope which emphasises the genre to the audience. This set up also leads to comedic situations as they try to convince others of their fake relationship.

Humour and tone also plays a big part in romantic comedy trailers as it is a big part of the genre. The trailer for anyone but you uses many quick cuts of humorous and witty dialogue to not only show their false relationship, but to highlight their growing connection to each other in a romantic way. The opening of the trailer is Bea and Ben having witty dialogue which enhances the light-heartedness and humorous tone of rom coms. This further reveals genre in trailers.

Music and sound is also important in establishing genre. it is used to show the romantic, light atmosphere of romantic comedies. This trailer uses upbeat, lively songs that show the films fun and exciting energy. The exaggerated sound effects also highlight the comedy and emphasise the tone of the film. Visually, anyone but you also follows generic romantic comedy elements. Bright, colourful visuals and the picturesque Australian backdrop contributes to the feels romantic atmosphere. There is also playful imagery, for example them trying to recreate iconic romantic moments which adds to the films humour and comedy.

In conclusion, the trailer for 'Anyone But You effectively embodies the romantic comedy genre by using all the conventions above. It successfully targets romantic comedy lovers that like the rom com's emphasis on fantasy and enemies to lovers tropes.
