COMPARING TV SPOTS - 'INSIDE OUT 2'

The first TV spot I am going to be looking at is from the film 'Inside Out 2', which is a coming-of-age animation film.

TV spots are usually very short clips, with fast-paced editing to spark excitement for the audience and not reveal much about the story. They are used when the film is almost out, so they have finished filming. This means that they can use lots of short clips from the actual film (unlike in teaser trailers) without revealing too much of the plot. This TV spot of 'Inside Out 2' uses many conventions of TV spots.

Firstly, this TV spot uses fast-paced editing to build excitement and maintain viewer excitement. TV spots usually use quick cuts and sharp transitions to keep viewers interested. This is because it will be shown to not only their target audience, but also because that want to cram as much exciting information and visuals in as possible in the days building up to the film's release, to encourage audiences to go and see the film the moment it is released. This means they need to interest other people by creation suspense and tension. TV spots must immediately engage viewers as they are only 30 seconds long on average (though some are even shorter) and shown on TV in between shows (or, increasingly, on social media feeds).

'Inside Out 2' is a sequel. This means that they need to spark curiosity for a second film. TV spots usually do this so people get excited for the next film in the franchise. In this particular TV spot they introduce new characters ('emotions'). This sparks curiosity as viewers may want to know how these new 'emotions' may affect the central protagonist as a teenager. Doing this gives fans something new to watch, beyond what they saw in the first film. It also attracts new audiences that may find the 'emotions' interesting or be able to relate to them.

TV spots are usually very short, approximately 30 seconds. This is so that they fit into the commercial TV breaks and can capture attention quickly. This TV spot from 'Inside Out 2' is only 30 seconds, capturing attention fast before viewers tune out with the fast editing and cutting. This is common for TV spots.
