COMPARING TEASER TRAILERS - 'BARBIE'

 The first teaser trailer I am going to be looking at is the teaser trailer from 'Barbie':

The teaser trailer for the 'Barbie' movie uses many conventions of teaser trailers. 

It reveals hardly anything about the plot and includes very few images from the actual film. This is because teaser trailers are not meant to spoil the whole plot line, but to create anticipation by withholding narrative information and to tease the audience to build up the desire to watch the film when it eventually comes out. 

The trailer for 'Barbie' also uses intertextuality to widen their audience and expand their target market. It is a parody of '2001: A Space Odyessy'. This would open up interest from other audiences, people that enjoy sci-fi for example, a bigger male audience and an older audience familiar with the film it is referencing. They have doen this because the teaser trailer is meant to create buzz and get spectators talking about the film. Creating a parody of an older, classic film creates more discussion leading to a greater buzz about the forthcoming movie. It also has the audience asking questions, and sharing their answers.

This specific trailer's purpose is just to make audiences aware of the movie coming out. It doesn't need to have specific images or eye candy in it because it is based on an extremely recognisable brand that people know and love. When a film is 'based on' something like a book, another film or a brand they already have a target market and a predestined fan base, they can afford to release a very broad trailer just showing a basic idea of the film. 

This is a classic teaser trailer because it uses many conventions and withholds any information about the plot to get the audiences excited and talk about the film. 

Conventions:

- In this teaser it says "Only in theatres July 21"

- It does have some images from the film, but that is not the main focus of the trailer 

- This is common in teaser trailers because it is just to tease that the movie is coming

  soon, not to reveal the plot

- Title of the film 

- Mentions the name of the director "Greta Gerwig" to get fans of her films excited 

- Has reference to the source that the film is based on - "Barbie by Mattel"
